Drug Uses

Prandin is an oral hypoglycemic drug that lowers blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin release from the pancreas. Prandin is prescribed as an adjunct to a diet and physical exercise for hyperglycemia treatment in adults with noninsulin-dependent diabetes (type 2 diabetes mellitus).

The recommended initial dose of Prandin to the patients, previously taken blood glucose-lowering drugs, makes 1-2mg three times a day with meals (3 to 6mg per day).

The patients, taking medications to lower blood glucose in the first time, are indicated with one Prandin tablet three times a day (1.5mg per day). The maximum recommended Prandin dose is 16mg per day.

Missed dose

If you’ve missed a dose of Prandin and it is almost time for the next dose of the antidiabetic agent, just skip the missed dose of Prandin. Do not take two doses of Prandin at the same time, and do not take extra hypoglycemic drugs to make up for a missed dose of your antidiabetic agent.

More Information

For adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, who fail to effectively lower the glucose level, Prandin can be indicated in combination with metformin or thiazolidinedione. The maintenance dose of Prandin can range from 1.5mg to 12mg per day, taken with meals. The therapeutic dose of Prandin can be increased only based on the results of blood glucose response.

Storage

Antidiabetic agent Prandin should be stored in a dry place in a tightly closed container, at room temperature up to 25°C. Keep away from bright light and out of reach of children.

Warnings

Prandin may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) like other blood glucose-lowering drugs. The risk of hypoglycemia is especially increased, if a patient is missing a meal, experiencing long physical stress, drinking alcohol, or taking other medications to lower blood glucose. Severe hypoglycemia may cause brain damage, loss of consciousness, and seizure. To reduce the risk of hypoglycemia, Prandin is recommended to be taken during meals, any alcohol should be restricted, and long physical activity to be avoided.
